How We Began

Dog TemplateIn the early 1950's,  a group known as the Council of the Disabled, comprised of friends and families of people that were disabled and living in the greater Spokane area was formed. They were concerned about the isolation and depression they were witnessing in their loved one's lives. They decided to do something about it and came together with the idea to create an environment where people with disabilities could interact together.

When the Spokane Children's Home was closed in 1956, the Spokane Rehabilitation Center was founded at that location and began to provide services for the disabled.

In 1992, the building was sold and renovated to become the Transitional Living Center, providing apartments for women and children.

The Rehabilitation Center was renamed Center Pointe and moved to its present site. this helped the members to feel more part of the mainstream community. The very name change was important because it no longer emphasized that a person had a disability. Now the focus is more attention on goals and abilities. This location is beneficial also since it offers greater visability and a barrier free environment.

If it hadn't been for the generosity and foresight of the founders in the early 1950's, Center Pointe would have never come into existence. It took a lot of hard work to get the organization started, and for that many are grateful. They left a wonderful legacy on which to build in the future.

Center Pointe grew out of a community need. It continues to fill that need by providing a social community where people with disabilities find a way to expand their world.
